The Milepost is not a real mile marker guide, and my rental car GPS proved it in Wasilla
Everyone in the lower 48 thinks Alaska distances are huge, but they mix up the Milepost book with actual mile markers on the Parks Highway. I drove from Anchorage to Denali last June and a gas station guy in Wasilla laughed when I asked if mile 142 was near the turnoff. He said the Milepost is just a trip planner, the real markers are small green signs, and some of them are buried under snow until May. Waze tried to route me down a gravel road near Talkeetna because it thought a lodge driveway was a highway. How do you locals keep track of real miles versus the book miles on the Dalton?
