Had a homeowner in Portland ask me to save a maple that was clearly a goner
It was a big old silver maple with a huge cavity and major root rot, right by their driveway. The guy just stood there and said, 'But it's been here longer than I have, there's got to be a way.' I had to explain the decay was too far gone and it was a safety risk. How do you all handle those tough conversations when a tree is past saving?

Man, that's rough. I read an article once that said to focus on the "why" behind the removal. Don't just say it's dead, explain how the root rot makes the whole structure fail, like a building with no foundation. It helps them see it as a safety issue, not just a loss.

My neighbor's rotten oak crushed their car last fall, so @william_taylor is spot on.

Totally agree with the building foundation example. I once tried to explain root rot to a client by comparing it to termites in a house frame, but I just ended up sounding like a bad science teacher. Framing it as a safety thing is way smarter.
