My buddy Jake said I was overthinking the root flare on a big oak

He told me to just expose it and stop worrying about the exact depth. I did it his way on a job in Greenville last Tuesday and the client was thrilled. Anyone else have a simple piece of advice that just clicked?

Hold on, you can't just wing it with a root flare. That's how you get girdling roots five years down the line. I've seen oaks where someone "just exposed it" and they cut way too deep into the main lateral roots, basically wounding the tree. The exact depth matters because you're looking for that first major root, not just scraping dirt until you see something woody. Doing it wrong sets the tree up for a slow decline.

Yeah, @riverwells is right. It's like people think close enough is good enough, but that little bit of extra care actually matters for the long run. See it all the time with stuff that's supposed to last.

Maybe paul9 is right but sometimes you just gotta trust your gut.
