Update: A client's comment about my climbing line made me rethink my gear check

I was finishing a removal in Boulder last week, and the homeowner pointed at my rope and said, 'That looks pretty fuzzy, is it still safe?' I told him I inspect it, but honestly, I'd gotten used to the look. I checked my log and realized that line has seen over 300 working hours. Now I'm ordering a new one this weekend. How often do you guys actually retire your primary climbing lines?

What finally made you decide to replace yours?

You used to think pushing lines to 300+ hours was the way to go, right? I was totally in that camp until I realized the performance drop was costing me more time and frustration than early replacements ever did. Now I'd rather swap at around 200-225 hours and save myself the headache (and the mediocre results).
