I was sure the 'Roman shipwreck' story from Sardinia was a hoax

The initial photos looked too clean, like a movie set, and the local paper's report read like a press release. Then a colleague sent me the full site survey from the University of Cagliari, which showed dendrochronology dates placing the timber around 180 AD. Has anyone else been totally wrong about a find because the first report was so badly done?

Check the survey for the wood analysis details. Did they mention any cargo found with the wreck, or was it just the hull timbers that got dated?

Oh man, I feel that. I once spent a whole week telling everyone a local 'viking coin' was a total fake because the first picture was some blurry thing on a red towel. Turns out it was real, the guy just had a really bad camera and worse lighting. Made me look like a total clown. I mean, I guess that's why we wait for the actual reports, but still.

A whole week? Man, that's rough. I would've just deleted my account and moved to a new town after that.
