I asked 40 strangers on a forum the same question I asked 3 friends, and the strangers gave better answers
Back in March I posted a random question on a forum about how long it takes to learn something new, just to see what would happen. I'd already asked 3 friends the same thing and got "uh, depends" from all of them. The forum gave me 40 replies with actual numbers, like "about 6 weeks if you practice 20 minutes a day," plus stories about what tripped people up. My friends aren't dumb, they just didn't care enough to think about it, and 40 strangers apparently did. Has anyone else noticed that a random crowd of people online will out-answer your actual social circle?
40 strangers apparently did [care]" is doing a lot of work here. The forum people who clicked on your thread were already the type to care about that topic, that's the whole reason they were there. Your 3 friends got asked out of the blue while probably doing dishes or half watching TV. That's not the same test at all. Ask those same friends about something they're actually into and see if you get "uh, depends." A crowd isn't smarter, it's just filtered for interest, so of course the answers look better.
