The library's 'quiet floor' sign made me realize we've lost the plot on silence
Last Tuesday I was at the downtown branch and overheard a mom tell her kid to whisper because other people were 'trying to read.' Then I saw three people on their laptops with full volume YouTube playing, no headphones. Nobody said a word to them, but the kid got shushed. It took me back to a 2019 study I read that said background noise above 50 decibels hurts reading comprehension by about 15 percent. We've gotten so scared of policing anyone that we only enforce rules on the most polite people. Has anyone else noticed that public spaces like this have completely given up on basic courtesy standards?
