Tried to swap a light fixture in my bathroom and the wiring was so hacked together I spent 45 minutes just trying to figure out what was live
Ended up having to call an electrician anyway because whoever installed it before me had used wire nuts the size of my thumb and taped over everything like it was a craft project has anyone else dealt with old wiring that makes zero sense?

AND you can't even get MAD at the old guy because his janky work DID keep the lights on for decades. That's the part that kills me. It's like how my grandpa fixed his truck with a coat hanger and duct tape and it ran for another 10 years. These older guys treated safety codes like suggestions and somehow it all worked out until WE show up and have to untangle their mess. But at the same time, every time I find stuff like that I think about how we're all just a few bad decisions away from becoming THAT guy who future owners curse out.

Wire nuts the size of my thumb" okay that is absolutely horrifying lol. Like was this guy wiring a house or building a boat? I had a similar thing in my place where they used electrical tape so thick it was like a cast on a broken arm. Took me forever to peel it off and underneath was just bare wire twisted together like a pretzel with no nut at all. I'm honestly surprised your house didn't burn down before you got there.
