My son went from 2 words to full sentences in about 5 months, and the change was a picture board
My son is 5 and has autism. Back in January he mostly said single words like milk or up, and a lot of the time he just pulled my hand toward what he wanted. His speech person at the clinic here in Spokane set us up with a simple picture board, just laminated cards with velcro, no app, no screen. We started using it at meals and bath time, and for the first 3 weeks he mostly ignored it and I felt silly pointing at cards. Then one night in early February he grabbed the cracker card and said cracker on his own, and I actually teared up at the kitchen table. By June he was putting 4 and 5 word sentences together, things like I want the blue cup please, which he never did before. I am not saying the board fixed everything, he still needs help and some days are rough, but those little cards did more in 5 months than a year of me just repeating words at him. Has anyone else had luck with low tech picture cards over an iPad app? I keep wondering if we should switch to a tablet now or just stick with what is working.
Oh sure, and next you'll tell me the velcro cards also do your taxes. But seriously, the cracker moment got me. My kid went nuts for a stupid $3 flashcard set from Target after we blew like $400 on some fancy tablet thing that just turned into a YouTube machine. The screen became the reward instead of the words, you know? If the laminated stuff is working, why mess with it. Tablet can wait.
