My therapist's advice about scripting felt wrong, but I tried it anyway

My therapist kept saying I should write out scripts for phone calls and even for small talk at work. I thought it was silly, like I'd sound robotic or fake, especially since I've always winged it and then crashed afterward. Last week I finally made one for calling the DMV in Austin about my license renewal. I wrote down what I'd say if they asked certain questions, and the call took 8 minutes and I didn't stumble once. Has anyone else found that scripting actually helps in the moment, or does it just make your anxiety worse about predicting the wrong thing?

Was the wait really that bad, or are we overthinking a DMV call?
