Told my kid's school they were wrong about his 'attention problem'

The school kept saying my son needed a 504 plan because he couldn't focus in class, but I saw him hyperfocus on his Lego sets for 4 hours straight at home. Turns out it was just sensory overload from the fluorescent lights buzzing - has anyone else dealt with schools missing the real issue?

Oh man, this hits close to home. My nephew had the exact same thing happen - the school was dead set on him having ADHD but it was literally just the damn lights. They put him in a corner with a little desk lamp instead and suddenly he could focus fine. It's wild how quick they are to label kids without looking at the actual environment first. You might want to see if they can try some simple stuff like letting him wear a hat or sitting away from the loud vents.

Yeah the hat thing works. Had a kid at my store who couldn't handle the ceiling lights. Gave him a ball cap and he calmed right down. Try asking about a dimmer switch or natural light spot in the classroom too. Sometimes the simplest fix is what they overlook.
