Debate: Should we wet sand before clear or after on a metallic base?

I wet sanded a base coat on a silver Honda Pilot last week and the metallic laid down flat-no tiger stripes-but I had to reclear the whole panel because it got cloudy. Now I'm wondering if I just got lucky or if wet sanding base is actually a legit trick for metallics. Who else has tried this and what happened?

Leave that base coat alone. Wet sanding metallic before clear is a gamble every time, especially on silver which shows EVERY flaw. You probably burned through the metallic flakes, which is why it went cloudy. The real trick for tiger stripes is to get your spray pattern perfect and lay down a wet coat with a quality clear over top. If you HAVE to fix a metallic issue, hit it with a sealer first, not sandpaper on the base.

Yeah "burned through the metallic flakes" is exactly what happens, that cloudy look never comes back right.
