Had a 20 year old kid teach me something about transmissions last Friday
I was at the shop complaining about a 4L60E rebuild that kept slipping, and this young apprentice from across the bay just said 'you ever check the bore clearance on the pump?' I laughed it off at first cause he's been wrenching maybe 2 years. But he showed me the numbers on his caliper and sure enough I was .003 off. Stung a bit admitting he was right. Anyone else had a younger guy school them on something basic?

yeah that's a good lesson but I gotta call something out real quick lol. .003 off on a 4L60E pump bore is actually within spec for most builds, I think what he probably meant was total clearance was stacking up with the gears. The real trick is checking the crescent clearance too cause that's where you'll lose pressure if it's too tight. Still, good on him for catching something and you for listening, most old heads woulda told him to get lost.

Gotta be honest, I had to read that three times before I realized I was the "good on him" part and not the one who messed up. I've definitely been the guy who brings a micrometer to the party and finds out their idea of "close enough" is way different than mine. That crescent clearance thing is a good point though, I probably woulda just slapped it together and wondered why my pressures were wacky.
