Pro tip: Skip the switchbacks on Iceberg Lake trail in July

Everyone says to stick to the main route over Ptarmigan Pass, but I cut through the old avalanche chute on the north face last season and saved about 2 miles. The scramble was loose rock but doable with trekking poles and no snow. Has anyone else tried that side route or is it just me who thinks the main trail is overrated?

...and that's exactly how I ended up sliding halfway down a scree field on my butt, totally worth it though.

@ryang65 classic case of realizing the hard way is usually the most fun way lmao

Used to think people who said "learn from your mistakes" were just being dramatic. Then I tried to take a shortcut down a steep trail in slick trail runners. Ended up doing the full butt-scoot for about 50 feet. Rocks in places rocks shouldn't go. Now I get it. The fun part is the story you get after.
