Vent: That lady who yelled at me for using cold butter in pie dough at a community bake sale

At the church bake sale in Maplewood last fall, this older woman came up and told me my crust would be tough because I didn't let the butter sit out for exactly 45 minutes. She kept repeating it even after I told her I use the cold butter method on purpose. Has anyone else had a stranger try to correct your baking technique in public?

You really should have let the butter soften. Ice cold butter might give you those little flaky pieces, but it also makes the dough way harder to roll out without cracking. If she's been baking pies for decades (and a lot of church ladies have), she probably knows a thing or two about what works for a sale where people are paying good money. A perfectly uniform crust that won't fall apart is more important than chasing some trendy TikTok technique. That woman was probably just trying to save you from a whole table of sad, broken pies.

Aw man, you're totally right. I've been there trying to roll out ice cold dough and it just cracks and sticks everywhere, it's a nightmare. Honestly, for a bake sale where you need like a dozen pies, you gotta think about speed and reliability. That little bit of extra flake from cold butter isn't worth fighting with dough that fights back. The church ladies have been doing this longer than TikTok's been around, so maybe listen to them.
