I think the EU cookie popups are a free speech win, not the joke everyone says
I know the popular take on here is that those cookie banners are useless clutter that everyone just clicks through, but I actually watched something shift between 2018 and 2022 when I was helping run a small dog grooming shop's website. Before GDPR, we had zero clue what data brokers were scraping off our booking page, and after we added the consent tool, we found three trackers we never signed up for, including one pulling customer emails to a resale list. Being forced to name what we collect made us cut the list from eleven tools down to four, and our customers could finally say no without losing the booking feature. Isn't a law that makes companies ask before taking your data a kind of speech protection, or am I missing why people here hate it so much?
