Just found out my VPN trick for watching a show from Tokyo isn't actually legal there

I've been using a VPN to watch a specific anime that's blocked in my country for the last six months, thinking it was just a copyright thing. A friend who lives in Osaka told me the show's creators actually asked for the ban over a political subplot they didn't like. Has anyone else had a moment where bypassing a block felt okay until you learned the real reason behind it?

Your friend's story about the political ban made me just stop using the VPN for that show.

Seriously? That's the exact reason I started using one more. If they're going to block a show over some silly political thing, it just proves the point that you need a way around it. Giving up feels like letting them win. I'd rather watch what I want and not let some random rule tell me no.
