Just switched from a 5/8 to a 1/2 guard for my initial outline and the difference is huge

I always used a 5/8 guard to start my skin fades. It was just what I learned. Last week, my buddy at the shop in Tacoma told me to try a 1/2 guard instead for that first guideline. I was skeptical, but I tried it on my next client. The blend from skin to the first guard is so much smoother now. The 1/2 leaves less of a jump, so the transition is way easier to manage. It gives me more room to work with my clipper over comb technique too. I feel like I shaved 5 minutes off my fade time because I'm not fighting that first line. Has anyone else made this switch and found a better guard sequence for a classic taper?
