Just snapped a brake cable while tightening the bolt on a new set of calipers

I was out on a ride in Boulder last Saturday and went to adjust the rear brake at a stoplight, then the cable end broke clean off inside the pinch bolt, and I had to walk three miles back to the car wondering if I should have used a torque limit on that little fastener.

Wow, a brake cable just snapping clean off inside the pinch bolt? That's crazy. I've had cables fray or pull loose, but never had one just snap like that while tightening. Walking three miles back to your car after that sounds miserable. I guess the bolt was just too tight or the cable had some hidden damage from before. Makes me wonder if I've been over-tightening my own brake bolts all this time.

Cables don't just snap for no reason... probably had a nick in it from a crash or it was old and corroded inside the housing. Walking three miles stinks but honestly it's not like you crashed and got hurt or anything. People act like a snapped cable is the end of the world when it's really just a minor inconvenience.
