Regular customer finally let me fix his 14 year old shifting issue

Had a guy come in last Tuesday with a 2011 hybrid he bought new. He always said the gears just felt crunchy and it was normal. I took it on a test ride and the cable was stretched about half a centimeter, plus the rear derailleur hanger was bent 2 degrees. Showed him with my Park Tool gauge and he just stared at it for a minute. Said he had thought for over a decade that he was just a bad shifter. Rebuilt it in 20 minutes and he rode around the block twice, came back laughing. Anyone else get customers who put up with a mechanical issue for years because they think it's their own fault?

Bet the same guy's been blaming himself for years about cheap tools and bad cooks.

Ugh, that poor guy! It's kinda heartbreaking he spent 14 years feeling bad about his own hands when it was just a dumb cable. Bet he felt like a total rockstar after that lap though.
