Unpopular opinion: that Park Tool Blue Book torque spec chart for older quill stems is not the final word
I read in a 1987 Bicycling mag that the old spec was 15 to 20 in-lbs, but my shop's chart says 80, and now I'm wondering how many stems I've been crushing over the last 5 seasons.
My buddy who ran a shop in Portland back in the 90s swore by 15 to 20 in-lbs on those old quill stems, said the 80 number came from a misprint that just got passed around. He used a little beam wrench on every build and never cracked a single one. 80 sounds way too high for that thin steel.
