Went to a bike co-op in Portland last week

Walked into the Community Cycling Center and saw a guy using a park tool chain whip on a 20 year old freewheel that was caked in rust, and the volunteer just said 'that's a Tuesday' like it was normal, has anyone else dealt with a shop that has zero standards for tool care?

Oh boy, that really gets under my skin. I took my old Schwinn to a co-op in Eugene a few years back and watched a kid use a chain whip that looked like it had been through a war. The teeth were all bent and they just shrugged when I pointed it out. Said something about "character" on the tools. It's like these places forget that bikes are precision machines, not junk you can just hammer at. I understand they're volunteer run and budgets are tight, but there's a line between using stuff up and just being careless. Takes all the fun out of fixing your own bike when you're worried the tools are going to strip your parts.

@the_beth, you ever ask them if they even bother greasing the threads on those tools or just let em grind everything to dust?
