That one comment about my rulebook layout gutted me

Posted a WIP of my game rules in a design critique group and someone said 'your left column text looks like a ransom note with that font mix.' I spent 4 hours last Thursday redoing all the typography with just two fonts and a 10pt grid. Has anyone else gotten feedback that forced you to scrap hours of work in one go?

Totally feel you on that... it's like a punch to the gut when you put all that work in and someone points out the obvious flaw in one sentence. Hope you're feeling better about the new layout, cause that grid sounds solid.

Your left column text looks like a ransom note" - did you actually agree with them after the sting wore off?

That ransom note comment actually made me laugh because my sister once sent me a birthday card where she cut out letters from magazines, and I thought it was a threat until I saw the glitter. The thing is, bad design can accidentally look like a crime scene if you don't space things out right. Took me a minute but yeah, they had a point once I stopped being annoyed.

Palmer.zara, that's a fair question, and honestly, after I cooled down I had to admit the person wasn't wrong. The ransom note comparison stung because it was true, I just hadn't seen it myself. I think @angelac63 put it well when she said it's a punch to the gut, but in my case it was a needed one. I kept trying to make a jumbled mix of fonts work because I liked each one individually, but together they were a mess. The grid system was a lot of work to set up, but at least now the text actually looks like it belongs in a rulebook and not a crime scene.
