That book club debate about 'The Great Gatsby' at a coffee shop in Austin last week got so heated the barista asked us to leave

I was just trying to say Nick is an unreliable narrator and this one lady kept cutting me off shouting 'you're missing the point' until the manager came over and told us to wrap it up, has anyone else had a book club debate turn into an actual fight?

...and that's exactly where it all goes off the rails, isn't it? People get so attached to their own reading of a book they can't even hear someone else's take. I had a friend literally stop talking to me for a month after I said Holden Caulfield wasn't a hero, just a rich kid whining about his problems. That's the thing about book clubs, they're supposed to be about sharing ideas, not winning a fight. Feels like some folks show up just to prove they're the smartest one in the room.

Nah, sometimes a good argument is what makes it interesting...
