Had a customer bring in a book she said was 'haunted'

She came into my shop in St. Louis with this old family Bible, insisting the binding was making spooky noises at night. I opened it up and found a single, perfectly preserved cicada shell wedged between the cover boards. When I showed her, she just stared and said, 'So the ghost... was a bug?' I had to try so hard not to laugh. Ever had a client bring you a repair with a weird story attached?

A careful clean can solve a lot of weird problems before you even start. I always check for old insect casings or bits of paper caught in the spine. It saves time and stops a lot of strange stories.

That "haunted" binding noise is almost always a bug or a bit of loose debris. I get that a lot with old books from basements or attics. The best thing you can do is a really careful clean and vacuum before you even start the repair. Use a soft brush to get into the spine and the hinge area. You'd be shocked how many "ghosts" are just dried up beetles or pieces of old paper that got stuck.
