A master gardener told me my soil was 'dead' and it changed everything

She tested a handful from my raised bed and said the lack of worm activity meant no nutrients were cycling. I started composting with coffee grounds and eggshells three months ago, and now my tomatoes are actually producing fruit - has anyone else had luck fixing dead soil on a tight budget?

Dead" soil sounds a bit dramatic for a few missing worms.

...and that's exactly the PROBLEM. A "few missing worms" is like saying "a few missing bricks" when your house starts leaning. Worms are literally the way soil breathes and moves water around. Without them, you get dirt that turns into concrete when it rains and dust when it's dry. It's not dramatic, it's basic biology. Your plants will tell you the difference real fast.
