My cat unplugged my EEG headset mid-calibration and honestly the data was better
So I finally got my hands on a used OpenBCI setup about two weeks ago, mostly to mess around with motor imagery stuff, nothing serious. I blocked out last Saturday morning to do a proper calibration run, gel electrodes on, hair a mess, sitting perfectly still in my kitchen in Portland because it's the only room with decent lighting. Twenty minutes in, my cat Miso decides the electrode cable dangling off my head is the greatest toy ever made and yanks the whole board off the table. Headset went flying, one electrode popped off my scalp, and I just sat there with gel dripping down my neck feeling like a total idiot. Here's the weird part, when I checked the recording afterward, the chunk of data right before the yank was the cleanest alpha wave signal I've gotten all month. I've done three sessions since then trying to recreate it and my signals are noticeably worse. Starting to wonder if I was actually more relaxed because I'd stopped caring about the calibration going perfectly. Has anyone else had their best brain data come from a session where everything went sideways?
Disagree that relaxation is the whole story here. Chasing a "perfect" calibration setup actually adds pressure, so you tense up without knowing it, and a cat wrecking your session proves the run doesn't matter anymore. My take is that the messy run worked because you truly stopped trying, and you can't fake that just by telling yourself to chill.
