An old mason in Phoenix told me to step back 20 feet before judging my own lines
I was laying a porch footing at a house near Camelback and kept fussing over one course that looked off to me. He walked over, made me stand across the street, and from there the line ran dead straight. How far back do you all step to check your work before you rip something out?
Was it really 20 feet though? The thing is, if you back up that far, you're mostly checking whether the line is straight over all, not whether one course is off. To catch a course that sits wrong you want to get low and sight along the wall from maybe 5 or 10 feet, basically level with the work. The far back trick works great for long straight runs, but for a footing near Camelback you might be fooling yourself if you trust the view from across the street.
