Changed my whole setup after a chat with a barista in Portland

I was working in a coffee shop in Portland last month, my journal open on the table. This barista, while wiping down the next table, just looked over and said, 'You know, you can use a single pen for everything. I just use a black Pilot G2 and change the pressure.' I'd been carrying a whole pencil case with me for years, convinced I needed different colors and tips for different tasks. Her comment stuck with me because it was so simple. I went home and tried it for a week, forcing myself to use only one pen. It cut down my packing time and actually made my pages look cleaner, less cluttered. Now I'm a convert to the one-pen method. Has anyone else made a big shift like that based on a small piece of advice?

Totally get the one pen thing, it's a game changer. But I have to say, the Pilot G2 is a solid pen but it smears like crazy if you're left handed. That was my big lesson. Switched to a Uniball Jetstream and it dries instantly, no more gray hand. Sometimes the perfect tool depends on your own weird habits.

That part about your own weird habits. It's the whole thing right there. We get sold this idea of the perfect, one size fits all tool. But real life is messy. Left handed, sweaty hands, writing on bad paper. The best tool is the one that actually works for your day, not the one on the blog list. It's true for pens, kitchen knives, even software. The fix is usually simple, but you have to figure out your own problem first.

Oh man, left-handed smearing is the worst.
