Shoutout to the distribution center in Memphis for showing me why more inventory isn't the answer
I toured a 3PL warehouse in Memphis last Tuesday and watched a picker walk past four pallets of the same SKU to grab a box from a half empty bin. The supervisor told me they keep 60 days of stock on hand because a buyer got burned by a stockout back in 2022, and now half their floor space is dead weight. I used to think more inventory meant fewer headaches, but this place proved the opposite, every extra pallet is another thing to count, move, and eat cash. We're running 45 days at my shop and I'm tempted to cut it to 30, but I want to hear from folks who actually made that jump. How did you handle the panic from your sales team when the shelves got thinner?
