TIL our inventory system was off by 35% for 6 months before I caught it

I was doing a routine audit of our warehouse in Phoenix last month and kept noticing numbers that didn't add up. Turns out our receiving clerk was checking in orders against the wrong purchase orders for about half a year. We had pallets of stuff sitting around that the system said we didn't own. The fix was simple, I just added a barcode scanner step at the dock door. Has anyone else had a mismatch like this that took forever to find?

and that reminded me of the time I was doing an audit at a smaller warehouse in Tucson a couple years ago. They had a whole pallet of industrial fans sitting in the back that nobody could find in the system. Turns out the guy who ordered them used his personal email instead of the company one, so the purchase order never synced with the main system. It took like three months and a new hire accidentally tripping over the shrink wrap to find them. Was your barcode scanner fix a pain to set up?
