My sister's observation about uneven doors helped me perfect my alignment technique.

So what was the actual observation about the doors that made things click? Like was it noticing the gap at the top versus the bottom, or how they sit in the frame when closed? I'm trying to picture the specific detail that changed your whole approach to getting things straight.

Oh, the "gap at the top versus the bottom" thing... it reminds me of when I was trying to hang a picture and kept adjusting the wire, but the real problem was the wall itself wasn't flat. I spent an hour on the wrong detail.

Ha, that's exactly it! I've spent so much time fiddling with hinges when the whole door frame was out of square. You just end up feeling silly for not seeing the obvious problem first.
