Update: Dropped $310 on a drum sander attachment that almost cost me a whole maple order
Bought a $310 drum sander attachment for my drill press back in March thinking I could skip the wide belt for small panels, and on the first batch of 12 curly maple drawer fronts it burned swirl marks so deep I had to take them down a full 1/16 and lost two pieces to thickness. Took it apart and found the drum was never true from the factory, off by almost .020 across the width, which is why every pass dug in on the left side. Anyone else get burned by one of these cheap bolt on drums, or did I just get a bad one?
That .020 runout across the width explains the left side digging in on every pass. Did you check the drum with a dial indicator before you mounted it, or was the bend only showing up once it was spinning?
