Why does a simple shelf pin hole take 45 minutes?

I was fitting out a pantry cabinet last week, nothing fancy just adjustable shelves. I marked all my holes with a template, grabbed my drill, and started going. First hole went fine, second one the bit snapped clean off inside the board. So I had to dig it out with needle noses, which took forever. Then my replacement bit walked on the third hole because I was rushing. Ended up patching that one with filler and redrilling after lunch. By the time I got through 8 holes I had burned almost an hour on a job that should have taken 10 minutes. Has anyone else had a day where the simplest task just fights you the whole way?

That snapped bit sounds like a total nightmare, I feel your pain.

Watched a buddy try to drill through a snapped bolt last week, ended up with a drill bit stuck in there too. Sometimes you gotta walk away and let the metal win.
