After my old filter failed on a week-long trek, I learned this

Boiling water while filtering saves hours in camp.

Yikes, a filter conking out on a week-long trek is my actual nightmare. But boiling water while it's filtering to save hours? That's legitimately clever, I'm gonna try that next time.

When you mentioned the filter conking out, it got me thinking about another layer to this. Boiling while filtering is smart for time, but it can actually degrade some filters faster if they're not rated for hot water. I learned the hard way that exposing my ceramic filter to boiling temps cracked the element, so now I check specs first. It saves camp hours, but might cost you in filter replacements if you're not careful. Still a great hack, just worth knowing the limits of your gear.

Nothing like treating your hundred dollar filter like it's a dollar store kettle. Saw a guy try this with a pump filter once and it melted the plastic housing into a modern art sculpture. Sure saves time, right up until you're boiling lake water in your hat because your gear is now a science experiment. We all learn the hard way, some of us just get better stories about our dumb mistakes.
