Unpopular opinion: cushioned backing vs. separate padding on slider jobs

I was down in Nashville last month doing a big office install, and I noticed half the guys were using carpet with cushioned backing while the other half swore by separate padding. The cushioned backing crew said it saves time, but the padding guys argued it lasts longer and feels better underfoot. I've done both and I'm honestly torn on which is actually better for high-traffic commercial spaces. What do you all usually go with for slider installations?

Did a 50,000 sq ft school gym floor last year and we split sections both ways. The cushioned backing delaminated in spots by the heavy doorways, so I'm sticking with separate padding for commercial work now.

Wonder why more installers don't just go with separate padding after seeing stuff like that happen.
