Wasted $200 on a fancy knife set that dulled in two weeks
Bought this big name knife set from a cooking store near me. Spent $200 thinking I was getting quality. After two weeks the chef knife wouldn't cut through a tomato without squishing it. Took them back and the guy said I should just buy one good knife instead. Now I feel dumb for falling for the shiny box. Anyone else get burned by a knife set that looked good but was trash?

Did you get any kind of store credit or refund when you took them back? At least that guy was honest with you, which is more than most salespeople would do. I made the same mistake a couple years ago with a big box knife set that looked all fancy in the case. After three weeks the handles started wobbling and the blades felt like butter knives. What finally worked for me was just buying one solid chef's knife from a brand that does lifetime sharpening. It cost me about what you paid for that whole set, but it's been three years and it still cuts like day one. Better to have one tool that actually works than a drawer full of pretty junk.

Pretty sure the guy was just unloading a set nobody wanted, not being honest with me. Respectfully @lily97, I don't think one expensive knife beats a decent set for someone who cooks different things every night. You need a bread knife for crusty loaves and a paring knife for small stuff, and one chef's knife can't do it all.
