Pro tip: the Chinese calligraphy brush I bought for $12 on Taobao fell apart after three uses
The ferrule just slid right off the handle while I was dipping it in ink, so should I spend more for a real one from a specialty shop or is there a trick to making these cheap ones last?

Did you try tightening the ferrule with a little superglue before it gave out?

Nah, I actually don't think superglue is the right move there... if you're having to glue the ferrule back on, something else is probably wrong with the rod or how it was assembled. I've seen guys do that and then the glue just cracks out again on the next hard cast. Usually it's better to just strip it all down and rewrap the tip top proper with some fresh thread and epoxy. Takes a little longer but you won't be out on the water wondering when it's gonna pop again.
