PSA: The 'precision' on those cheap Chinese calipers is a joke
I stopped by a tool supply place in Cleveland last week and saw a display of digital calipers for $12 each. Picked one up and the jaws had a 0.005 inch gap when closed. That's not measurement, that's guessing. I've been using Mitutoyo for 8 years and never had that problem. Anyone else run into this with budget measuring tools?

Oh yeah, that 0.005 inch gap is rough. But just a heads up - even Mitutoyo calipers can drift out of spec if you drop them or don't clean the jaws. I've got a pair of those cheap $12 ones too, and after I wiped the rails clean with alcohol and adjusted the zero, it's actually within 0.001 inch now. Not saying they're as good as Mitutoyo, but a little maintenance can help a lot.

Wait, you got them to within 0.001? How the hell
