That Haas VF-2 at the job shop in Reno changed my mind on toolpathing

I used to rough everything with traditional 2D contours because I thought dynamic milling was just hype (you know, a gimmick). Then I watched a guy at Howard's Precision Machine run a 1.5 inch indexable through 4140 with a trochoidal path and it cut so quiet I nearly choked on my coffee. What made you guys finally switch over to adaptive clearing if you were stubborn about it too?

Did you accidentally drop your coffee on the floor or just almost choke on it, because that sounds like a pretty good show to witness? I was the exact same way, thinking dynamic toolpaths were just fancy marketing fluff until I saw a guy rough out a whole block of stainless with a 3flute and the thing barely made a peep. Now I can't help but laugh at my old 2D contour setups that sounded like a wounded bear.

Ha, "sounded like a wounded bear" is too accurate. Same thing happened to me, I switched to a constant stepover trochoidal path on some hardened steel and it was like a knife through butter compared to the old way. The chip thinning is the real magic trick nobody tells you about.
