I always figured the first X-Men comic was a huge hit right away
I mean, I was reading an old interview with Stan Lee from a 1998 magazine I found at a garage sale, and he said X-Men #1 in 1963 actually sold really poorly. It was almost canceled after like 66 issues. Idk, I just assumed it was an instant classic. What other big series had a super rocky start?

I used to think that too. That interview really changed my mind about how things start. It makes you wonder how many other hits almost didn't make it.

Right? It's wild how much comes down to pure luck. I read somewhere that the author almost threw out the first chapter of a famous book because they hated it. Makes you appreciate the near misses.
