A tender boat captain in Galveston asked why my bailout bottle was on my left hip and I got defensive, then did the math
He wasn't trying to bust my chops either, just asked it casual while I was rinsing gear off after a 60 foot pipeline job. Said he watched a diver in Fourchon panic grab for his reg on the wrong side when his umbilical got fouled on a riser. I ran the numbers on my own setup and realized my left hip mount adds about a half second to my reach, which is nothing on deck and a mile in bad vis. Been switching it to the right for two hitches now and the draw feels way cleaner underwater. Anyone else swap side later in their career and wonder why they waited so long, or am I just stubborn?
Man, that half second math hits different when you actually run it. I ran a pony bottle on my right for years then switched to left after a cave class and yeah it felt like learning to write with my other hand at first. Give it a few more dives and the draw will be automatic, your body just needs reps.
