Set up a RAID 5 array at a client site in Dallas and it failed within the first hour
I was building a new file server for a small law office and used three identical WD drives, but the array dropped a disk right after initializing. Turned out one drive had a bad controller board from the factory, so I swapped it and rebuilt the array - has anyone else run into new drives failing that fast?

Reliability of the drives aside, is a single drive drop in the first hour that big a deal? Swapping a bad drive is annoying but it's not like the whole array went down.

Oh man, that is brutal! I feel your pain on that one. I had a brand new Seagate drive fail during the first parity check on a RAID 5 setup once, and it was such a headache. Nothing worse than spending all that time cabling and configuring only to have a dud right out of the box. Hope the rebuild went smoothly and that law office isn't giving you too hard a time about it.
