Question about using a magnesium float versus a steel trowel on a garage floor

We poured a 24x24 garage slab in Toledo last week and I finished half with my old steel trowel and the other half with a new magnesium float I borrowed. The magnesium side was way smoother with no tearing, even when the concrete was still a bit wet. What's your go-to tool for the first finish on a big slab like that?

Always start with a magnesium float. It gives you a better finish without pulling up the cream like steel can. I only switch to a steel trowel for the final burnish.

That bit about switching tools for different stages really hits home. I see it all the time, like how you use a different knife for chopping herbs than you do for slicing bread. The right tool at the right time just makes everything smoother.

My uncle poured a patio in Akron and swore by his magnesium float for the first pass. He said the steel trowel was like trying to spread cold butter, it just grabs and pulls. I mean, I get why you'd use the steel if it's all you have, but that smooth side you got doesn't lie. It's one of those tools that makes you realize you've been working harder, not smarter. I'd stick with the float from now on.
