Just realized I wrote a prompt about a sentient toaster and it turned into a whole novel about grief

I only meant to write a quick 500-word scene, but the character's voice took over and I finished a first draft in three months. Has anyone else had a silly prompt spiral into something way more serious?

Oh man, I used to be exactly like that... thought a silly idea was just a joke that needed to be cut down to size. Then I wrote a one-line joke about a coffee machine that could only speak in sarcastic compliments and three months later I had a 200 page thing about loneliness and addiction. It just happens sometimes when a goofy concept actually has room to grow, you know?

That's how the best stories start.

Hold up, is it actually about grief though? Sometimes we call a story deep just because it got long. A toaster having feelings is still a silly idea at its core, no matter how many words you use. That draft might just be you avoiding the real work of editing a simpler version. Maybe it's not as serious as it feels right now.
