Stopped at a gas station outside Flagstaff and saw something that gave me a story idea

It was this old, beat-up payphone. Still had a phone book chained to it, pages all yellow and torn. But someone had drawn these little cartoon monsters in the margins with a blue pen. Like a whole battle scene. Got me thinking. What if the phone book was a secret bestiary? Each drawing was a real creature, and calling a number from its page summoned it. Been stuck on where to take that idea next. Anyone ever build a whole plot from a random object they saw?

That phone book bestiary idea is seriously cool.

And that vending machine could totally be run by some cryptic guy who only restocks it at 3 AM, and everyone in town has a theory about what happens if you buy all the batteries at once. Like maybe they're not even batteries, they're little power cells for something weird he's building in his garage. Or the oyster crackers are the real clue, each one has a tiny symbol pressed into it that matches a map if you line them up right. You could build a whole mystery around who's supplying that thing and why.

Reminds me of this weird vending machine I saw once... it only sold single batteries and those little packets of oyster crackers. Always wondered what story was hiding there.
