Funeral hugs vs handshakes, why does nobody talk about this?

I went to a funeral in Dublin last year and got the handshake from the whole family, then a cousin from the US came over and went straight for hugs. Same family, same event, but nobody even blinked at the clash. How do you all handle greeting customs when half the room expects one thing and the other half expects the other?

Handshakes are fine, hugging strangers feels forced honestly.
