Had to choose between a fancy funeral and a simple one for my dad in rural Kentucky

When my dad passed in 2022, my siblings pushed for the $8,000 funeral package with the fancy casket and embalming. I grew up around his stories about how funerals are just expensive parties for the living, so I pushed back hard. We settled on a direct cremation for $1,200 and held a potluck at the farm where he taught me to fix fence posts. Has anyone else had to fight family over money stuff when someone died?

That potluck sounds like a perfect way to honor him.

Yeah, honestly, it really does work well. We did something similar for my neighbor's dad last year. What made it special wasn't the food itself but how everyone brought a dish that meant something to him. Like, one guy brought his famous chili because they used to watch football together every Sunday. Another lady brought her banana bread since his dad always had a slice with his coffee. It just turned into this big storytelling thing where each dish had a memory attached. Makes you wonder why more people don't do stuff like this, you know?
