Just realized my $300 donation to a local political campaign got me labeled a 'troublemaker' by some extended family back home.
In my family's culture, openly supporting a candidate, especially one challenging the status quo, is seen as disrespectful and inviting bad luck, so now my aunt won't even speak to me at gatherings.

Ever think family would turn on you for trying to do some good? I used to believe keeping the peace was the most important thing, no matter what. But seeing how they treat you for just backing what you believe in, that really changes a person's mind. Makes you wonder what that kind of peace is even worth.

Used to believe the same thing, that peace was worth any price. Watching people get mad at you for just having principles really flips a switch. It shows you that quiet isn't the same as things being okay. Makes that old kind of peace feel pretty cheap in the end.
