Remember when talking about mental health got you labeled as 'crazy'? I was one of those skeptics for years.
Back in 2008, my uncle told me he was seeing a therapist for anxiety, and I secretly thought he was just weak. Fast forward to 2015 when I was working 70 hour weeks doing HVAC installs in Phoenix summers, and I couldn't sleep for three weeks straight. My doctor finally talked me into seeing a counselor, and honestly it took about 6 sessions before I admitted to myself that it was helping. Now I tell every kid who works with me that your brain needs maintenance just like a furnace does. Anyone else have that moment where you realized you were the one being close-minded about something?

Told myself I was fine for years until my own brain finally called me out on it too.

What helped me was starting with just small check-ins with myself, like asking how my mood was on a scale of 1 to 10 each morning? I kept a simple log on my phone for a couple weeks and it showed me patterns I never noticed before. Once I saw the proof in my own notes, it got way easier to take the next step and actually talk to someone.
